Rebarreling just means unscrewing the factory barrel and replacing it with another. Normally you want to upgrade the barrel quality in the process because the cost of cutting a new chamber and headspacing is not insignificant--figure at least $150, maybe more. This is a job that needs to be done by a qualified gunsmith. A short action will work fine, but you want to make sure your get one with a .308 bolt face. That means don't start with a Remington .223. You most difficult decision will be the barrel twist. To shoot the heavy, 100gr+ bullets, you'll need a 1 in 8" twist. If you want a Varmint gun, I suggest 1:12 or 1:10. Good luck?

Truing a Rem action is having the gunsmith set it up in the lathe and recut everything true to centerline of the action. The thread tenon, lug abutments, action face, bolt face, lugs on the bolt, all get machine so they are perfect. I had a Rem that was .013" off on the face. Meant that when the barrel was tightened it was force .013" to the side. Not good. My smith bores the bolt raceways and bushes the bolt for a tighter fit also. Mike
