Just saw the write up on the BR-PPC flash hole uniformer. does the BR lapua brass need this treatment to fit a decapping rod thru?

i didnt really want to spend another 40 on a gadget unless i had to.

i have a flashhole inside bebur tool from midway, but it probably wont fit into the BR flashhole??

damn small primer pockets/flashholes anyway!!

jb1000,

I have 500 peices of the Lapua brass and I am using the Redding S-type bushing neck die with no problems in the decapping rod getting thru the flashhole. I'm with you, I didn't want add an extra step if I didn't have to. The lapua flashholes are so clean they don't need deburring

I have both the L.E.Wilson arbor dies and the Redding Competition 7/8x14 press dies, for the 6mmRemBR. I use Lapua 6BR Norma brass. Lapua brass flash holes supposedly measure .060". I do not have any measuring device capable of getting in the flash hole for a measurement, so I will believe Lapua. The decapping pins ARE smaller in diameter than the primer flash holes. Wilson measures .0575". So there is not an interferrence fit.

I did purchase the Sinclair Flash Hole Reamer($35.75 plus tax), on a visit to the Ft. Wayne, IN area. My purpose/logic was to make all the flash holes the exact same diameter. The Sinclair reamer brings them up from .060" to .0625".
I probably am overkill in this area, but I did it anyway. I have flash hole reamed over 400 rounds and I doubt it took me more than 30 seconds per case.
As the Lapua flash holes are drilled instead of being punched, like US brass, I do not believe that flash hole burrs are a problem. I believe that the flash holes are drilled from the inside out, but cannot swear to this. At any rate, I do not plan on doing any inside flash hole deburring.

I've read and reread this post and I'm still not sure if the question is one of de-burring or enlarging. If it is de-burring, I don't see how a few twists of the de-burring tool could hurt. As to de-capping pins not fitting through the Lapua BR cases, the standard ones won't(as in the RCBS universal de-capping die) however the de-capping rod in the 6BR Redding dies(others also I assume) is sized specifically for the smaller flash holes and therefore pose no problem.Don't know if this helps or if I missed the point, but that's not too unusual for me!!

I've deburred all 700 of the Lapua BR cases I bought for my BR Improved rifles. Used the Possum Hollow tool for PPC/BR cases that Sinclair sells. Whether Lapua drills their flash holes or not, there were burrs. Didn't do a whole lot of testing, but 10-shot groups at 600 off the bench showed a measureable improvement with deburred cases. The downside is that this tool doesn't have a cutter stop, so if you use it, you've got to be careful not to go too deep. I worked by feel, holding the cases against the cutter (which was chucked in my lathe, set at its slowest spindle speed) with just enough pressure to make it cut until things smoothed up. You can feel when the burrs are gone by the feel of the case against the cutter. The resulting cut isn't nearly as deep as what I get when using the Sinclair deburring tool with the stop cuff around the cutter.

flatlander; I am surprised about the burrs. I guess I have to do one more step in my brass prep. Thanks, bcott

I thought the question was about 'ENLARGING' the flash hole.
The standard depriming pin at .062 will not go thru 6br Lapua brass (Wilson may be one exception).
A drill bit of .0625 size should work ok, but should be deburred to clean up any fragments left from drilling.

The confusion lies in the fact that there are really 4 (and maybe even 6) processes involved:

1. inside flash-hole deburring
2. inside flash-hole reaming/uniforming (increase diam.)
3. outside flash-hole deburring
4. outside flash-hole reaming/uniforming (increase diam.)

Add to these inside/outside chamfering.

The K&M inside flashhole tool does #1 and #2, and the shape of the cutter tip provides a slight flare or chamfer on the inside edge of the hole. It has a stop-collar so it doesn't cut too deep; On our brass it only increased diam very slightly at the inside edge of the flashhole. It costs about $10 and is reviewed here: K&M Tool.

For tasks #3 and #4 you want the Sinclair Sinclair 07-3000 outside PPC/BR flash hole reamer:

We don't think the Sinclair 07-3000 tool is necessary unless you really need to open up the flash-hole if your decapper is sticking.

The last batch of Lapua 6mm BR brass we worked on did have some burrs on the INSIDE on maybe 10% of the cases. Nothing like domestic brass mind you, but it was there. The K&M tool removed that swiftly and easily.

Hey guys,if your decapping pin is hanging up, use or buy
(cheap) a 'LEE' decapping die, it has a .060 pin in it and
goes right through Lapua flash hole.

On my 26 October post I listed a Sinclair Flash Hole DeBurrer. My error.. That should have been Flash Hole Reamer. I have corrected it. I just went on line again after traveling from summer to winter quarters. Sorry for the confusion. bcott
