Technically the 105 gr. Amax should make an excellent long range bullet, especially with the plastic tip. However I understand the reason it is not widely used is that there are too many unexplained flyers per box of 100 bullets.
My question is - Has anyone looked into why these bullets don't work?

dmoran - Thanks for the info. When you inspect the boat tails for defects, what are you looking for? - Jay

JR,

I look for any flaws on the butt and the angle of the boat-tail. Scratches, depressions, nicks, etc....

I have taken my rejected bullets in the past and fired them
to see the errors. Once at 600yds, a 107 SMK that had a small
little nick on the edge of the butt, dropped 33" from the POI.
Another was a A-Max that's weight was a whole grain lighter, it went about 15" high from the POI at 1000yds.

Hope this Helps.....Happy Shooting

I shot my new 6BR at 300 & 600 yards today and the rifle is very accurate. I had a 5 shot group at 600 yards with a sling at about 6 inches or so. I was shooting the 105 Amax and 29 grains of Varget with a CCI magnum primer. Do any of you have a different Varget load than that?
Thanks, John

Johnq-my load is anywhere from 30.1-30.5g varget cci450 depending on the temperature out of a 28" tube[so much for varget not being temp sensitive].this load is warm[caution]-dave

Dave, looking at the Lapua cases, it appears some were marked by the bolt face after firing. The magnum primers looked normal, though. I have been ailing for the past week, so I still have yet to do and chronographing. (my doctor suspects I have some kind of adult whooping cough!)

sorry to hear about your illness.like i said the load is "warm" but the 6br case tan take it-but mainly when working up loads i look for the accuracy nodes in in.10g increments.just look for the node in your rifle and forget the speed.the current load i shoot gets 2880fps.-sd-6-with accuracy right at 1" at 400yds.anything over 2800+ will get you to 1000yds. no problem-dave
