Donovan,

Thanks for your post. Most of my direct experience with the double-base VV powders (550 and 560) confirms what you've said. I've also found that pressures can spike with these powders more readily than conventional powders if you hard-jam bullets into the lands. I always start a load about .025" out. To my surprise often jumping the bullet also yields the best groups, or at least groups that are very, very close to those yielded by close seating, and the ES is less.

N-540 does seem to be a very promising powder for the 90-95 grain BTs from Lapua and Berger. With this powder you can get the bullets up past 3000fps. This is what a lot of the Euro 300m shooters are using. You give up a little BC compared to the 105s (.420 vs. .500), but gain over 150fps. Out to 600yds that is probably a good trade-off.

Hoi Remmy (it's a small world),

Did you chronny the speeds? N150 seems like a very slow powder for the BR capacity. I can think with heavy bullets this would work better than with the lighter 68-80gr bullets (not enough pressure build up).

Are you going to Oirschot this coming saturday? I could bring my Chronny and set it up there.

most of the shooters(more then tirty br shooters) at our club (Belgium) are using n-140 with the lapua or sierra bullet.Last weekend we had the chrono at the range and got some vel. figures
n-140 gives approx 2760 ft with naked lapua bullets.this is our standard load we use for shooting all distances till 800m. ( load is on the hot side)
With moly bullets we get 2900 ft .
n-150 is also giving us good groups but i don't know the velocity. We don't use varget very much mostly because it is very difficult to obtain.

31.2 N150 with 105 scenar is giving me 2867fps, with same bullet and 32.5 N550 I get 2920fps. Little crater on the primer but no hard bolt lift. Both were very accurate at 300 meters.
N140 give's me a lot of pressure and not the fps I would like to have. Didn't try Varget yet cause it's hard to get and expensive here in The Netherlands.

Remmie,

A friend, Marnix Fleetwerk from the Netherlands has worked a lot with these powders. You can probably find his e-mail address on Benchrest.com
He'd be a good person to talk to about the VV powders.
Marnix if your reading this and if I've butchered the spelling of your name my apologies! Can't be any worse than what I get with Reever (Reaver/Weaver/Reeder,etc, etc.) LOL!

Well Danny....that marnix dude is me! LOL...
Today I used 30.8 N150 107SMK, Fed205 and some with CCI 450. Both worked very well at 300 meters...smallest 5 shot group was 0.866" and most of the time I shoot around 1.3". Didn't chrony'd them..yet. But I think it'll be around 2840fps.
N140 won't work for me...105 scenars or 107SMK. Don't know what it is...

Regards,
Remmy (Marnix Flikweert:))
