Precision Shooter magazine recently featured an article on custom dies. Yes they cost more money, but it seems the benefits are worth it, if you're looking for ultimate accuracy. But, there are moderately-priced alternatives, such a JLC Precision's modified Redding Dies.

Share your thoughts on selecting and using the best dies for our favorite caliber.

I use only type 3 die sets in any of my guns anymore.

1. Custom Neil Jones with shoulder bump bushings. The Rolls Royce of dies in my opinion. $275-300 and 1-2 months, built on 3 fired cases.

2. Redding comp sets. Very good but expensive for off shelf dies.

3. Forester Bonanza Ultra BR sets at $75 unmodified. With micrometer seater and FL sizing die converted to Redding bushing by Jim Carstenson (JLC Precision on BR Central and in Precision Shooting). Cost is $35 and less than one week turnaround.

Personally go with the Foresters first if possible. It think they are as good if not better than the Redding. Neil Jones is tops but at 2-3x the cost.

Bountyhunter,

Can you please explain the details of the Forster die that you purchased to have "JLC Precision" customize? Was it the 6BR Rem. that you gave to JLC? I couldn't find the 6BR Norma die on Forster's website.

When I called Jim at JLC, we talked about customizing the Redding body die to accept bushings which costs over $100. So I was thinking we might be talking about two different things. Thanks.

My BRH dies are custom Niel Jones made from fired cases. This was an extreme improved 6BR so had to do that route.

I have 4 sets of the modified Forester BR dies from JLC, but none in 6BR.

I am ordering a new 300 WSM die from JLC built on the Redding bump die. Got a new LG ready in about 2 weeks.

I have Newlon ( not very usefull ) , one Neil Jones set ( very nice made ) and most full sizer from Forster modified ( home made ) for bushing use

I dont send dies in the US only for shipping cost problem and shipping time

I have make some full custom die to for some of my wildcat , reamer for sizer cost less than a custom full sizer and that not more difficult to make home made custom sizer than to make a good chambering job , die heat threating can be done by any industrial company for few $$

good shooting

The cheapest, and certainly not the worst way to go, is with a Harrels FL die, and Wilson seater. There is nothing let to need. If you don't want to use a hand die for seating, get a Redding Comp. seater for the press.

I just had a 6BR barrel chambered, and let my gunsmith decide which dies, since he knows his reamer and prepped my brass. In the box was exactly what rws said....

Good shooting,

Bill
