Greetings: I'm completely new to this web site and forum. . .and to benchrest-type shooting, for that matter! I recently scored a very good price on a Hart 1.350" straight contour barrel chambered in 6PPC. And so the project and questions begins. . . The barrel, which is currently 23.5" long, was fitted to a Panda action. I shoot (and can afford) only Remington 700's. So. . .here's my list of inquiries thus far. Thanks very much in advance for any input you provide. I know you all have busy schedules and I truly appreciate the expertise and experience in this forum. No BS. 1. Is it worth having a gunsmith thread the barrel for a Remington action? I only have $100 into the barrel, which has about 1000 documented rounds through it. 2. I'm going to have the barrel rechambered in 6mmBR with a .272 neck for no-turn Lapua brass. Does that sound right for a guy who doesn't know how to turn necks (and doesn't have the gear)? 3. What would I have to have done to an M700 action to make it capable of handling the extra weight of that barrel? 4. In Oregon, who should I send this to and what is the general ballpark $$? 5. Should I have the action sleeved? Barrel block? These are new benchrest terms to me that I've never dealt with shooting tactical shoots. 6. Should I consider any other Remington action? 40X, 600, 788? Thanks again! Matt

you are in Oregon rather to spend money to try to reuse a used BR barrel REM 700 or 600 or XP 100 i sjust fine for 6 BR AFTER blue PRINTING send you action to PAC NOR in OR to rebarrel it with a regular match barrel stainlees you van choose between 1 in 8 ( 105/105 ) 1 in 10 ( 88 to 95 ) or 1 in 12 , you start with frssh barrel and be far more sure than to put $$$ in real stuff with the right lenght and sale your used barrel for 100/125 USD that allow you to pay a good set of die good shooting DAN TEC

I think DANTEC gave solid advice. PacNor can chamber & fit one of their match 6mm bbls. to your M700, and you'll only be out an extra $120 for a fresh bbl. with whatever twist rate you want. It doesn't make a lot of sense to me to spend $$$ getting a used bbl. fitted that may not be what you really want/need, unless a shooter was equipped & had the skill to do the fitting himself.

Hello DuckDog: First, you need to determine what you want your rifle for. Benchrest, F-class, varminting, plinking? The desired use will have a lot to do with the decision. If that barrel is straight taper from 1.350" to 1.350" then it is huge. I hope the straight taper is from 1.350" to maybe .875" or something. It would be much more useable then. Just as a suggestion, if this barrel came off a benchrest rifle of some kind, it probably has been "shot-out" and no longer holds good accuracy. But Dantec has the best advice, at this point. A good barrel from Pac-Nor with a 6 BR chamber and .272" neck is in the vicinity of $300. I would suggest you have the Remington action "blueprinted" (approx. $75) which means a qualified gunsmith will square and thread everything concisely. In Varmint-for-Score, benchrest, etc., there is little justification for sleeving or barrel block. Those are mostly used on Ultimate and Unlimited rigs. A good 700 action with a good tight-chambered barrel will shoot way beyond your expectations. Good luck, and enjoy ... ---------- ReedG

Thanks for the info, Gentlemen. I think I'll take your advice and forget salvaging that big barrel. For info, it was off of a rail gun. . .that 1.350" measurement was from chamber to muzzle. NO taper at all. Who in Oregon would you recommend to do the action work? And since the action will already be at the smith, what all do I need to have done? Are there any little tricks I could also have done? Thanks again for your help.

Also. . .this gun will probably never shoot past 200 yards. What weight of bullet and what twist should I get? Length of barrel? Thanks.

For 200 max, with occassional runs to 300m, we'd go 24"-25" with a 1:12 twist. That will let you run up to the 85gr flatbase and will probably stabilize even the 87gr V-max out to 300m. More length will give a little more velocity but the barrel won't be as stiff. 24" will allow you to still have 22" if you want to re-chamber some day. Suggest you get a 3-groove Pac-Nor (in Oregon) or 26" Hart, Lilja, or Krieger blank from Bruno's Supply. He has HV taper in stock for about $260.

In my not so humble opinion, John Benjamin in Portland can build a barrel and intall it for less than the guys mentioned and it will be supremely accurate. He made my Palma taper 1 in 8 twist barrel, using the reamer I bought from Pacific technologies.

Give Steve Kostanich in Chehalis, WA a call. He's a BR gunsmith who does good work for a reasonable price. JayDub

Duckdog The barrel you have at 1.350 inches probaly has a 13,14,15 twist rate to it.If you were to re-chamber and crown it you wouldn't need a barrel blck or sleeve as it would probaly finish up at 21 inches. If you are only going to shoot 200 yards you can use Sierra 70 gr hpbt's and get outstanding accuracy if the barrel isn't firecracked or has other problems.A good gunsmith can take a borescope and let you know how it looks before you spend money. On an unlimited railgun it doesn't take much before a barrel gets removed and it might still shoot very well on an informal target gun.The big barrel can be turned down to any dimension you want for around $50 and 1.250 for three inches tapering down to 0.930 at the new finished length would make a nice rifle. DMJones first off, welcome. second, please turn off the CAPS LOCK -- it is considered shouting, and is hard on the eyes. third--your question will probably get better feedback if you start a new thread/post instead of tacking on tothis one. JB :)
