I want to rebarrel my 700 Varminter that is in an HS Precision stock for a carry around varmint rifle I use for eastern woodchucks. Due to the topography where I hunt my shots rarely exceed 300 yards. Am I better off with a 6BR or 22BR? I would prefer to shoot no turn Lapua brass.

If I go the 6BR, what barrel do I want for shooting Hornady 65 gr V Max bullets. Also what velocity will I get with this projectile?

Thanks for any advise.

Personally, I would go for the 6 mm br shooting the 65 gr, vmax. A 14 or 12 twist will make her a flat shooting hard killn set up! 500 yard shots could be taken if need be.

Hi Ed:

I think either will do what you want and be more than sufficient. I personally have a 6 BR and after spending a summer with it, I highly recommend it. My 1:14 twist barrel will shoot everything from 55-gr. to 80-gr. with tremendous accuracy and 55-gr. Sierra BlitzKings at a little over 3,500 fps will shoot into 1/4" at 100 and less than 1/2" at 200. On something like a 'chuck, they are equivalent to a hand grenade going off!

I hope this Web site continues to promote interest in the 6 BR because it is just a super cartridge and the Lapua brass is the most consistent and highest quality I've ever seen. Enjoy whichever one you decide on ...

I've got both and would go with the 6BR.The 22br will flat shoot small groups as mine currently has the smallest 300 yard group at the local club were i shoot. The problem with that is you'll soon tire of shooting at that range once your kill ratio goes up and it will definitely go up if shooting either choice. The 6BR with the heavier bullets has the same trajectory as a 300 Winchester Magnum shooting 190 gr MatchKings at 2950 fps only with less retained energy. If i were to build another 22BR i would only do so with a 8 twist barrel and the heavy bullets so i could extend its useful range.Just one mans opinion but i think you'll definitely like either and in the long run prefer the 6BR.
